Hi there

I went and finished an album with the folks at Bedford Records - http://www.bedfordrecords.com/ - but it's not gonna be available for a wee while. Why? Because I haven't got the internet connection for it. To upload it to Bandcamp will use a lot of internet juice and I won't manage with the 4GB dongle I'm currently using.

Never fear! I hope to get the album - titled "Come On Sweetheart, Take My Hand" - out by mid-Octber at the latest.

Much love,
Joseph xx

Hello hello hello

Sorry it's been a while, been cooped up in a certain studio somewhere in Aberdeen...

Just posting to tell you of my LAST ABERDEEN SHOW for a YEAR at LEEEAASST (shouting!) this Saturday (September 10th) at Tunnels 2.

It's an acoustic extravaganza with the following awesome people:

WILL LEATHERBARROW
DANNY YOUNG
MARK BYRNE
HOLLY SKINNER
ANDREW BRAND

And of course myself at some point...

Also, keep an eye out over the weekend for some FAB NEWS.

You ROCK.

Hi guys.

Long story short: I'll be moving to Australia in just over a month's time.

It's sad to say goodbye to a country and a city that has given me, musically, so much experience and helped prod me in the right direction over the last twelve months or so. But times change, and I'm now joining the tidal wave of British folk leaving for Perth where, hopefully, I can continue to gig and enjoy making and performing music.

I'll obviously maintain my websites and Facebook, I'll still be alive. :)

Hopefully I'll have music to let you hear by the end of the month.

Goodbye, Aberdeen, and thank you for everything.

I cannot stress enough how much sympathy I feel for the victims and the families of the victims at the shooting at Utøya yesterday. This was the act of a coward and a spiteful person who deserves no good treatment.

Stay well, Norway. You can fight this.

Morning.

I've got a gig to announce, at long last! :D

Catriona Leighton, The Rich Gordon band and myself will be at Cafe Drummonds on August 7.

I believe entry is free! So come on down!

Some lovely news to do with some local shoegazers soon, too, with any luck...

Hello!

Forgot to post about this! ):

I'll be first on at Tunnel 2 (the better Tunnel, natch) at, well, the Tunnels tonight.

Also playing are the likes of Ashley Park and several other fantastic acoustic artists.

A fiver on the door, everything to charity.

Head on down! :D

'Allo allo!

Today (UTG Big Picnic at Union Terrace Gardens in town) was pretty good! Great crowd, determined even in the pishing rain :P

Sunday night sees a bunch of other bands and I showcasing for the chance to be on the Northern Lights festival bill. Really it's just an excuse to get a gig in, should be a good laugh! Not sure of the precise details just yet, but I'll be joined by Malfunction, The Shores and Nova Kings. Sound good? Good!

Thanks for reading.

June 07, 10:18 AM

Hello there.

Just a few words about covers, bands who do cover songs, and playing said covers live.

I'm not going to beat around the bush: I'm not nearly as popular as I'd like (but is anyone?). Those who have given me compliments, bought my music (even though they're demos, which is pretty bloody awesome) or seen me live - I can't even begin to thank you for the support you're supplying, it's really giving me the confidence to go on, make more music, invest more into recording and equipment, and so on. Thank you.

But there are acts out there that do far better than I do, obviously. What gets me, though, is that a lot of them are new to the scene and attract people with covers of songs that aren't theirs.

When I first started playing, back when I was 12, obviously I learned covers; Green Day, The Killers, Bloc Party, stuff like that. As I went on, through 13, 14, 15, I must have written at least fifty songs of my own, and I told myself that, if I ever played live, I would never ever play a cover.

But now I see bands going around covering more often than they write - one local guy is the same level as me, gig-wise, and has only written one song himself - and I'm starting to feel that it's getting harder to attract people to my Facebook and website because they simply don't know what the songs are called.

A quick query aimed at my Facebook fans on the topic reveals that those who have (and still do) support me feel that covering is the artist's individual choice - granted, I've gotten a blanket "no" from Twitter - but the question really is: How fickle are the people who attend my gigs?

I doubt that anyone who isn't related to me goes to my shows to see me, really, and that's okay - I support people, they don't support me. It'd be a bit like flying somewhere on KLM purely to visit Schipol - nobody does. I really don't mind this, but I would like to have my music and style stick in people's heads and have them on board, as it were. It seems a good way to do this is to play covers.

HOWEVER (bold all caps) playing covers is still very much something I do not want to do. To me, if you want to hear a song, you stick the mp3 on, you stick the CD on, you stick the vinyl on. Or, God forbid, you see the original band live themselves. I hate when people play covers - I want to hear their music, not their favourite band's!

So for that reason, I won't be playing any covers on stage, ever, ever, ever, unless you ask me to. And even then it'll be "Friday" by Rebecca Black.

Love

Joseph xx

Hello hello

Got a "variety" concert to advertise here - a group of Aberdeen University students are organising a gig at the Blue Lamp (on the Gallowgate) with a lineup to be confirmed.

It'll be on the third of June and proceeds are going towards an Estonian teaching initiative.

Lovely!

More info soon...

I probably should have told you this earlier, huh.

Anyway, this is Esperi, a man from Dundee who makes lovely noises with a guitar and various other things. He's going to be playing tonight at Drummonds, and I'll be supporting.

Juffage, too, will be playing. I really like what I've heard of the Leeds-via-Chicago's "sound artist", like this here track:

It'll be a bargain £5 on the door, which opens at 8pm.

Thank youuuu

I'll be the opening support to the lovely but very strange tUnE-yArDs when she comes up to destroy Aberdeen.

Here's a wee video of them in a book shop playing songs "Hatari" and "Gangsta". :)
